Coronavirus antibodies and immunity: What we know and what we don't know at this point Are those who have previously had COVID-19 immune to getting the virus a second time? In short, experts really can't say something definitive like that. But, it’s highly probable people with antibodies have some protection from re-infection. The question may be how long those who have been previously infected are immune to the virus. One expert we talked to told us straight up, "It's complicated." There is a lack of cases coming in that are identified as re-infection. It really comes down to this -- if you have had COVID-19, it doesn't mean you have a pass to hug people or travel around without a mask. It's still not clear whether you can test positive for the virus a second time.
