Maybe it just felt like this on the west side of the state, but WHEW! What a harsh transition from falling leaves to falling snow.
Up to 9 inches of snow was being reported by local meteorologists in Whitehall, Spring Lake and North Muskegon by late Tuesday afternoon in what could be a record-breaking snowfall.
The snowstorm even canceled several trick-or-treating events in the Muskegon area and left more than 35,000 customers with Consumers Energy without power. |

Where bridges are most critically in need of repair in Michigan |
Data from the Department of Transportation: Michigan has 11,300 bridges and 1 in every 10 is in poor condition. As of this fall, there were 1,300 bridges rated in poor condition, including 436 that were last assessed as being in serious/critical condition or in imminent risk of failure. Find a bridge:Comparatively, Michigan had 33.6% of its bridges rated in “good” condition and 54.8% rated in “fair” condition. The state’s rate of “poor” bridges is higher than any other in the Midwest and higher than the national average. See a map of our bridges and their ratings here. Oxford school shooting review finds administrators failed ‘in certain critical areas’ |
The findings:Nearly two years after the Nov. 30, 2021 Oxford High school shooting that led to the deaths of four students, a third-party analysis claims staff and administrators failed in “certain critical areas.” Looking at the report: “Although only the shooter is guilty of murder and assault, and his parents will be tried for their alleged gross negligence with respect to their son, the district was responsible for keeping Madisyn, Tate, Justin, Hana and all of the other OHS survivors and students safe and secure ... but failed to do so,” said the 572-page report. “While we did not find intention, or callousness, or wanton indifference, we did find failure and responsibility by omission. In short, responsibility too often was denied and shifted elsewhere." In Grand Rapids: A man accused of killing one person and injuring three others in a shooting near downtown Grand Rapids fired his gun in a crowd of people fighting to protect his father who was in the scuffle, the man’s defense attorney claimed. |

‘Very convenient’: Michigan’s first early voters head to polls |
More than a week before an election: Lansing is one of 12 volunteer jurisdictions piloting early in-person voting for its November municipal elections before the practice becomes required statewide beginning with February’s presidential primary. Asking the court: Lawyers for Donald Trump said Jan. 6, 2021 was a riot, not an insurrection, as they argued to a Michigan judge that the former president can’t be barred from appearing on the 2024 ballot. In education: A new scholarship provides up to $4,000 to Michigan students attending career training programs. |

Lions trade for Browns WR Donovan Peoples-Jones, stand pat on defense at deadline |
Welcome: The Detroit Lions turned out to be buyers at the trade deadline after all, acquiring receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones from the Cleveland Browns about an hour before the 4 p.m deadline. Detroit gave up a 2025 sixth-round pick in the deal. Back to Monday: Aidan Hutchinson and the Detroit Lions are playing at a high level, and they’re having some fun while building something special around these parts. Hutchinson orchestrated the "Thriller" dance celebration for the Lions defense. Was it him?:Central Michigan University has opened an investigation into photos circulating on social media purportedly showing Michigan staffer Connor Stalions on the sideline of one of its football games this season. |
