It's officially fall. Do you have your Halloween costume ready? |
I told you, I'm a team player. So waking up today to this new season, I'm going all in. And it appears Mother Nature is way into autumn too, based on this drop in temperatures. Speaking of cold temperatures, we have info on the first freeze below. But back to the topic at hand, the fall season. It makes me think of changing leaves and Halloween. If you are a fan of the latter, we have a couple stories of interest for you. The actor who plays Michael Myers in the "Halloween" films will be present for the opening of a haunted theater attraction in Michigan. And if you get bummed that such attractions are typically seasonal, read about the local filmmaker opening the state's first year-round horror museum. I wish a happy fall to one and all. And tricks or treats galore. Whichever you prefer.

Where's the center of Michigan's population? See how it's changed since 1880. |
First of all, what is a center of population? The center of population is the average location of where people live. In other words, if the Michigan map was a scale and every person standing in their hometown had equal weight, the center of population is the place where the scale would balance, per the U.S. Census.
A look at the entire U.S.: The U.S. center of population has shifted westward over the decades – reflecting the overall population moving west. The center of the nation’s population used to be in Maryland east of Baltimore in 1790, but has moved nearly 886 miles since then. See more on that and Michigan's center of population here.
A helpful video: This handy video from the U.S. Census Bureau explains the concept in just 73 seconds. |

Will Michigan see a quiet winter or another COVID-19 surge? |
What will winter look like? Whether a new coronavirus variant takes hold in the coming weeks could determine if Michigan will undergo another seasonal COVID surge or enjoy its first quiet winter in three years.
From the COVID-19 Scenario Modeling Hub: The latest models suggest Michigan could see COVID cases and hospitalizations continue to plateau or even decline this fall if there are no new immune-escaping variants of coronavirus that gain traction through the end of the year.

Consumers want to look good when they feel bad about the economy. |
Growth in the beauty sector: As consumer sentiment fell in the spring and early summer, lipstick sales rose implying “the Lipstick Index is alive and well,” said Larissa Jensen, vice president beauty industry advisor at NPD. What is the Lipstick Index? The Lipstick Index has been a longtime economic indicator during times of recession. The idea is that despite economic downturn, lipstick sales grow because consumers still want to buy one, small item to make them feel good. Read more here.
