Taking flight: As migration season peaks, it’s possible to see gatherings of hundreds and even thousands of Sandhill Cranes in their typical resting spots in the Lower Peninsula. Shining bright: The final supermoon of the year will light up our late September skies this week.The big, bright, full Harvest Moon will reach peak illumination at 5:57 ET on Friday, September 29, according to the astronomy site EarthSky. Garden talk: Hydrangeas seem to be so easy to get to bloom. But sometimes the blooming just doesn’t happen. Meteorologist and master gardener Mark Torregrossa explores a few reasons that might cause a lack of blooms. Looking at the numbers: The rainfall totals so far this year look especially erratic. Michigan State officially fires Mel Tucker for cause with nearly $80 million left on contract |
End of an era: Following a tumultuous 18-day ordeal involving allegations of sexual harassment, the university formally fired fourth-year coach Mel Tucker for cause on Wednesday. Michigan State has no intention of paying the roughly $80 million remaining in his contract. Climate change’s unseen toll: New study finds extreme heat linked to severe maternal morbidity |
In climate: The United States has seen increasingly worsening rates of maternal morbidity, with up to 60,000 women affected each year. A new study says we can add one more contributing factor to the list—extreme heat. Causing harm: There are two widely popular landscaping shrubs wreaking havoc on forests across Michigan and the Midwest: Japanese barberry and winged burning bush. While outside: A “far from ordinary” forest near Ludington boasts hiking trails, biking trails and two disc golf courses. |
