Which Great Lake is the deadliest? |
Staying safe: Despite Lake Michigan's inviting beaches and beautiful views, it is actually the Great Lake that kills the most people each year. Overall, Great Lakes drowning deaths were down in 2023. There were 85 drownings documented by the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, down from 108 in 2022. But Lake Michigan accounted for almost half of those deaths, with 41 drownings occurring in the lake in 2023. Its accessibility and rip currents make it the deadliest Great Lake. Instructors demonstrated a high-tech tool designed for drowning prevention and water rescue at a Monday, June 10, training event at Silver Beach in the city of St. Joseph. E.M.I.L.Y. is a battery-powered and remote-controlled boat, which can be used at beaches for emergency rescues. |

Ascension believes some patient data was jeopardized in May cyberattack |
Exposed: The May cyberattack against Ascension health system was the result of an “honest mistake” by an individual working in one of the system’s facilities. As of Wednesday, the health system didn’t know precisely what data was potentially affected and for which patients. Ascension is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to any patient or associate who requests it. In Warren: Alexander Morris, the lead singer of the Four Tops has filed a lawsuit against Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren, over the way he was allegedly treated during an April 2023 visit. Repurposing: University of Michigan Health wants to replace a former high school with a 120-bed, $97.2 million behavioral health facility in Lansing. |

Burst of severe storms possible across southern Michigan; See where, when |
Stormy: A cold front moving through southern Michigan late Thursday could spark a line or even two lines of severe thunderstorms. The overall severe weather threat is highest in the southern third of Michigan from Flint and Ann Arbor to Lansing, Jackson, Kalamazoo and Benton Harbor. In the heat: Much hotter weather is expected at times next week over the southern half of Michigan. The National Weather Service now has a way to indicate if the temperatures could create heat-related illnesses. In the air: It'simportant to know and understand the air quality indices and forecasts.AirNow displays a variety of air quality information, including current AQI's for locations around the country as well as air quality forecasts given weather and fire conditions. |

UM launches feasibility study to explore adding D1 women’s hockey |
New possibility: The state of Michigan has not had an NCAA Division I women’s hockey program since 2011, when Wayne State folded its after 12 seasons because of funding issues. Denise Ilitch, who serves on the University of Michigan Board of Regents, called for the university to add a women’s hockey program at the March 28 regents meeting. The athletic department has since taken the first step in potentially implementing the team. WNBA: It seems that everyone has had an opinion on Caitlin Clark and her omission from the U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team. Jen Rizzotti, the selection committee chair, told the Associated Press that Clark was left off the 12-women team heading to Paris because she didn’t have enough high-level reps or experience playing at the sport’s highest level. In baseball: Keston Hiura didn’t have to spend more than a few days on the unemployment line. The first baseman released by the Detroit Tigers when Spencer Torkelson was demoted to Triple-A Toledo has signed a minor-league deal with the Los Angeles Angels. |

Historic paddlewheel boat offers beer, wine and a leisurely cruise out to Lake Michigan |
Try something different: If you’re looking for a leisurely day on the water, consider rewinding to the days of paddlewheel boats. The vintage, two-story paddlewheel called Star of Saugatuck offers an elevated view of Saugatuck and its waterways as its meanders down the Kalamazoo River into Lake Michigan. Ride on: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has released a proposal that supports expanding e-bike rules, 9&10 News reports. This would allow motor-assisted bicycles on state-managed trails and bike paths, including mountain bike trails. In Motor City: Life’s a beach at this urban oasis located right in the heart of downtown Detroit, surrounded by skyscrapers. The Beach at Campus Martius Park is now open for the season and features an outdoor bar and restaurant along with beach parties all summer long. |
