What we know about Hurricane Ian

Florida has declared a state of emergency as Hurricane Ian is on track to hit the west coast.

Hurricane Ian tore into western Cuba yesterday as a major hurricane, with nothing to stop it from intensifying into a catastrophic Category 4 storm. It is expected to reach hurricane force by this morning.

Florida residents are preparing as it is forecasted to strengthen even more over warm Gulf of Mexico waters, reaching top winds of 140 mph (225 kmh) before making landfall again.

Whitmer signs off on increase funding for police, road patrol

More police officers will be present on Michigan roads after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer gave the OK to three bipartisan bills which would increase funding for the state’s Secondary Road Patrol program.

The goals: The bills build on the MI Safe Communities program Whitmer launched last year which seeks to invest in local police, remove illegal guns from communities and expand opportunities in jobs, education and the justice system.

Whitmer signs off on increase funding for police, road patrol

Background: Researchers at the University of Michigan studied hydrogen’s potential role in the clean-energy transition away from fossil fuels, exploring ways the planet’s lightest element could power heavy-duty trucking and shipping.

Wrapping up: The scientists wrote a Michigan hydrogen roadmap report to conclude the project. This comes as Michigan recently joined six other Midwestern states teaming up to accelerate the development of hydrogen as a clean energy source.

Federally: The U.S. Department of Energy just announced a $7 billion program to fund regional clean hydrogen hubs – called “H2 hubs” – across the country as part of the federal bipartisan infrastructure law. The hubs would expectedly ramp up clean hydrogen production and distribution.

Blast from the past: Michigan plans new houses with early 1900s blueprints

Taking a page from the history book: To address the state’s aging and limited housing stock, the Michigan Municipal League and Michigan Economic Development Corporation have released free blueprints inspired by historic housing catalogs.

Why? The initiative, named Pattern Book Homes for 21st Century Michigan, is intended to cut time and cost by greenlighting multi-family floor plans and zoning for builders.
