Whitmer is asking auto insurance industry to give 'maximum amount' of $5B surplus back to drivers Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is seeking refunds of auto insurance fees, arguing a $5 billion surplus accumulated by the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association should be returned to Michigan drivers. In a Monday statement, Whitmer said the MCCA — a statutorily-established nonprofit that all auto insurers pay into for personal injury protection under the state’s auto no-fault system — currently boasts a surplus of more than $5 billion “and should be put in people’s pockets immediately with a refund check.” A spokesperson for Whitmer later said the governor was calling for the MCCA to return “the maximum amount possible” while also maintaining the viability of the fund, noting the association would ultimately need to review and make a final determination on what that number would be. LISTEN HERE A controversial bill that would prohibit Michigan schools from teaching about “implicit race or gender stereotyping” advanced through the Michigan House on Tuesday amid fierce debate among lawmakers. The bill, HB 5097, passed 55-0 after Democrats refused to vote because one of their colleagues was not allowed to speak on the bill. The bill, sponsored by Rep. From millages to local commissions to state senate races, we have all the numbers from across the state: New COVID-19 outbreaks up 41% from last week in Michigan Health officials identified 195 new COVID-19 outbreaks throughout Michigan last week, marking a 41.3% increase from the prior week. Additionally, the state is tracking 655 ongoing outbreaks from previous weekly reports, bringing the total active outbreaks to 850. That’s up 4.2% week-over-week, according to the health department’s latest report, updated Monday, Nov. 1. K-12 schools remain the most common setting for new outbreaks with 100 added over the last week.
