January 8, 2021 Hundreds of thousands of Michigan residents will become eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine program starting Monday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced this week. Three weeks after launching the vaccination program for those in group 1A -- frontline health-care workers and residents of skilled nursing facilities -- the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is now opening the program for those in group 1B as well as those age 65 to 74, Whitmer said. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, joined growing calls to remove President Donald Trump from office before President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in on Jan. 20, citing concerns from high ranking military officials that Trump is unfit for office. Slotkin, a former CIA analyst and Pentagon official, said she’s been in conversation with senior military officials at the Pentagon who are concerned about the president’s mental health. Slotkin said Vice President Mike Pence and Cabinet members should invoke the 25th Amendment to declare Trump unable to discharge the duties of his office. Late last year, 47 dogs were rescued after a house explosion in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Many of the dogs had burns and other injuries. After recovering, a bunch of these animals are becoming ready to find forever homes, with seven of the dogs already adopted. But he is now officially sworn in as an elected official. Swanson won the county's top law enforcement position by a wide margin in November. As he continues his work heading up the department, Swanson said he really wants to unify the community. “We’re going to make a mark and we’re going to change history and we’re going to create a unification that this town and this county has never seen,” Swanson said.
