Voting: After Michigan finalized its presidential primary ballots in late 2023, several candidates have since dropped out of the race. Here's who to expect on the ballot next month. On the Democratic side, voters can choose between President Joe Biden, U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., and Marianne Williamson, an author and speaker. Republican candidates President Donald Trump, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are still in the running. In public interest: Ann Arbor officials have drafted a new law intended to give people with criminal records a fair shot at getting jobs with city-hired contractors. |

Driver was using drugs or alcohol in 40% of Michigan fatal crashes |
Driving impaired: Michigan had 10,489 crashes in 2022 where the driver was found to be impaired by drugs or alcohol, resulting in 454 deaths and 6,327 injuries, according to the annual drunk driving audit completed by Michigan State Police in 2023. The answer was no: A Grand Rapids man asked the state Court of Appeals for leniency after a judge sentenced him to eight years behind bars, despite it being his 12th drunken driving offense. On the hunt: Police are looking for the driver and vehicle involved in a hit-and-run crash with a bicyclist on Monday in Northern Michigan, authorities said. |

Next week’s forecast map has Michigan switching into the red zone |
Slightly warmer: After Michigan'sbomb cyclone last weekend, the long-range forecast for next week has Michigan flipping to the red zone on the temperature map next week, according to the National Weather Service. Warmer and drier weather will soon start breaking our cold snap. In the sky: During the current deep freeze, Michiganders could spot more light pillars at night, meteorologists said. The light pillars occur when light is refracted off particles in the sky like fog or fine snow into the sky, creating beams of light that reach upward. Be mindful: Police are asking drivers to slow down during winter weather after a vehicle struck a police car on I-94 while an officer was responding to a crash. |

Report: Jim Harbaugh seeks immunity in Michigan contract extension |
New terms: According to a Tuesday morning report from Yahoo! Sports, Jim Harbaugh is seeking language in his new deal that would spell out any fines and grant him immunity from being fired amid fallout from the pending NCAA investigations into his program. Decisions are in after Monday’s NFL draft declaration deadline, and more than a dozen Wolverines players with some form of college eligibility remaining have elected to head to the pros. Here's a look at who's leaving the team and who's staying.

Dark sky park along Lake Michigan has trails through forest ‘winter wonderland’ |
Take a hike: Headlands International Dark Sky Park on Lake Michigan has more than five miles of trails winding through 500-plus acres of forest, which right now looks like a “snowy winter wonderland,” according to Emmet County Park Manager Jamie Westfall. Riding around: MoonBike tours at Boyne Mountain Resort are back for another year. Outdoor enthusiasts can hop on the small electric snowbikes that go up to 23 mph and explore the resort's scenery. Start sledding: If you’re looking for slopes to slide down in Grand Haven, check out these three area parks highlighted by the Grand Haven Area Conventions and Visitors Bureau that are perfect for snow day fun. |
