 At this point, 75% of Leelanau’s 16 and older population has gotten at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 67% are fully immunized -- easily making Leelanau the No. 1 county in the state for vaccination rates, with adjoining Grand Traverse County at No. 2. A rural county of not quite 22,000 residents, the Leelanau peninsula juts into Lake Michigan, forming Michigan’s “pinkie finger” in the northwest Lower Peninsula. Some say it is somewhat surprising that Leelanau is leading the way. “You’re not looking at a county that was just primed and ready for vaccine distribution,” said Casey Petz, superintendent of Suttons Bay Public Schools. The vice president and general manager of Thermo Fisher Scientific Portable Analytical Instruments Inc. told attorneys with Napoli Shkolnik in a letter last month that the hand-held device it rented from the company has never been marketed for any diagnostic use, including the measurement of lead in human bones.  With NCAA restrictions on recruiting lifted earlier this week, Jim Harbaugh took the opportunity to declare summer football camps back. Citing the pandemic, the NCAA moved last March to extend the recruiting dead period — eliminating the ability for college coaches to recruit high school prospects face-to-face. Instead, they had to rely on virtual settings, a phone call or text message. For Harbaugh, this season marks his seventh at Michigan and he's looking to get the championship-starved Wolverines into title contention. “Memorial Day is over. It’s June now.
