Winter storm clobbers Michigan with deep snow, gusty winds, bone-chilling cold

A potent winter storm roared through Michigan on Monday, bringing copious snow and bitter cold to much of the state. Hundreds of schools across the state were closed due to the inclement weather. Crashes closed freeways, including I-75, U.S. 23, and I-94. Conditions were so bad, the State of Michigan closed its Lower Peninsula offices early in the day. Dozens of businesses closed their doors, including some malls in West Michigan. Numerous flight cancellations were reported at the state's largest airports, especially Grand Rapids and Flint. MLive Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa cautioned that the wintry weather is far from over this week. On the heels of Monday's storm will come dangerous, bone-chilling cold and even more snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. Stay warm, friends. MORE

hat
A major shift in disciplinary actions is being credited for helping Kalamazoo Public Schools reduce expulsions to zero in 2017-18. The "paradigm shift" toward restorative discipline, such as daily class meetings or conflict resolution meetings, help students remain in school and learn resolution skills, said Nkenge Bergan, director of student services for the district.
