Steep enrollment decline posses challenges for Western Michigan University

Western Michigan University is at a bit of a crossroads. Student enrollment is down nearly one quarter since a peak of 27,829 attended in 2004. Less students means less tuition money. Less money means changes need to be made. Western will look to a new branding campaign to reverse the current trend. But it won't be easy. The dwindling number of high school graduates in the state has many universities scrambling to build and maintain robust enrollment numbers. MORE

A former pastor believes he was acting within his First Amendment rights when he stood outside a courthouse in November 2015 and handed out pamphlets. A judge and a subsequent appeals court ruled he engaged in jury tampering since the pamphlets contained information on jury nullification and were given to at least two potential jurors. Now the State Supreme Court will hear the case. MORE

First snowflakes on our long-range radar

If you haven't made it outside yet this week, please do so. It is lovely. And it shall remain lovely across the state throughout the week. But by the weekend, beware: Snow is coming. Well, at least a threat of snow Saturday night into Sunday morning in parts of the U.P. and Northern Michigan. Mind you, MLive chief meteorologist Mark Torregrossa isn't calling for snowcorn, as the picture might suggest. (Don't worry, it's a really old picture.) But with highs in the 40s, it'll feel like late October for sure. MORE

Promoters working to reschedule Claressa Shields vs. Ivana Habazin

Boxing is a sport that revels in spectacle. In fact, due to its dwindling popularity, one could make the case the sport depends on it. However, Friday's pre weigh-in melee left a bad mark for everyone involved. One man was taken to the hospital. One man fled the scene. And two fighters were denied a match for which they had trained. The bout also was supposed to be Claressa Shields' first as a pro in her hometown of Flint. MORE
