Wolf population doubles: More pups, new packs on Michigan’s remote Isle Royale.

A lonely few: Just a few years ago, there were only two wolves left on Michigan's Isle Royale. In 2018, the National Park Service began relocating wolves to the island from other areas in hopes to increase their population.

It's working: This winter, research team members estimated 28 wolves are now living on Isle Royale - double the number since the last count in 2020. The numbers show these big predators are now gaining a foothold in the remote outcropping of national park wilderness, and working to put a dent in its huge moose population.

Rock snot is growing as well: A nuisance alga called “rock snot” cropped up in a cold-water river in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula for the second time in nine months.

Grand Rapids police shoot man who they say pointed gun at officers.

A call came in: Around 1:45 a.m. in Grand Rapids, police were responding to a report of someone breaking into cars in the area. When police reached the scene, the suspect fled, then turned and pointed a gun at the officers.

The shooting: Both officers fired at the suspect, who was struck multiple times, police said. The wounded man is expected to survive. He was last known to be in serious condition, but was described as “alert and conscious.” The body cam footage has been released.

Afterwards: After the incident, police chief Eric Winstrom gave details of officer involved shooting and Michigan State Police investigated the scene.

These are the 15 best employers in Michigan, Forbes survey says

Here we go: What’s the best place to work in Michigan? According to a Forbes survey, the University of Michigan is number one. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is runner-up and automotive supplier Flex-N-Gate takes third.

Another list: Here are five numbers that illustrate how much student loan debt Michiganders have, according to the Federal Student Aid office at the U.S. Department of Education.

Braylon Edwards predicts Michigan football will go undefeated in 2022

Last season, former Michigan football star Braylon Edwards predicted a bounce-back season for the Wolverines, albeit with a couple of losses to their biggest rivals. This year, he’s projecting perfection.

Get paid to pick pine cones: DNR offering $100 per bushel this September

Cash for pinecones: Little extra pocket money in exchange for some pine cones? That’s the deal being offered by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources this fall, a bushel of fresh red pine cones will earn $100.

More from the DNR: The DNR is urging waterfowl hunters to use caution when harvesting and handling wild birds this fall due to the presence of avian influenza virus.

Get outside: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Outdoor Skills Academy is hosting three-day hikes for intermediate-level backpackers through Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park this September.
