Wolf population doubles: More pups, new packs on Michigan’s remote Isle Royale. |
A lonely few: Just a few years ago, there were only two wolves left on Michigan's Isle Royale. In 2018, the National Park Service began relocating wolves to the island from other areas in hopes to increase their population.
It's working: This winter, research team members estimated 28 wolves are now living on Isle Royale - double the number since the last count in 2020. The numbers show these big predators are now gaining a foothold in the remote outcropping of national park wilderness, and working to put a dent in its huge moose population.
Rock snot is growing as well: A nuisance alga called “rock snot” cropped up in a cold-water river in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula for the second time in nine months. |
