Wrong-way drivers are deadly, ongoing concern on West Michigan freeways Every year, 300 to 400 people die in the United States in wrong-way, head-on crashes on freeways. It might not seem like a big number, but the likelihood of death or serious injury in these crashes is high. West Michigan has had several deadly wrong-way crashes in recent years. A common thread of these incidents, officials say, is most drivers are under the influence of drugs or alcohol when they enter traffic going the wrong way, though that isn't always the case. There is enough concern surrounding the issue that the Michigan Department of Transportation is installing flashing warning signals at some off-ramps in an effort to alert drivers headed onto a freeway in the wrong direction. Police used riot gear, tear gas and rubber bullets on protesters. Many are speaking out against that approach by law enforcement, saying the use of military tactics with community members just makes things worse. A recent study found that the image alone of militarized units being used by local police can affect public confidence in departments and raise questions about funding.
