Although housing inventory has increased in recent months due in part to properties sitting on the market for longer periods, the number of new listings for the month that ended Sept. 18 fell 20% from a year ago, according to Redfin. Homeowners who have low mortgage rates or don't urgently need to sell may be biding their time about putting properties on the market, according to economists.

Manhattan apartment rents fell by $50 in August to reach a median of $4,100, ending several months of record-setting increases, according to Miller Samuel and Douglas Elliman Real Estate. "Rents are robust but they are starting to plateau," said Miller Samuel President Jonathan Miller.

Mortgage bonds climbed 0.4% Wednesday after the Federal Reserve announced it had no immediate intention to sell mortgage-backed securities holdings, worth $2.7 trillion. John Kerschner, head of US securitized products at Janus Henderson Investors, says the announcement makes money managers and others more confident in purchasing mortgage bonds, while Citigroup has revised an expectation of the start of Fed sales to April from November.
