AI researchers warn of ‘human extinction’ threat, call for increased oversight

Generative-AI technology is developing fast and some specialists fear that safety has taken a back seat

A group of 13 current and former employees from OpenAI, Google’s Deep Mind, and Anthropic have published an open letter calling for increased oversight and improved whistleblower protections in the industry to mitigate potential harms, Digital Trends reported.

The letter speaks of “serious risks” posed by AI technology if an effective oversight framework is not put in place.

The group claims that the technology could be misused to exacerbate existing inequalities, manipulate information, spread disinformation, and even result in “the loss of control of autonomous AI systems potentially resulting in human extinction” ...

New Motorola Edge pushes midrange envelope with a premium design

The latest iteration of the Edge now includes a customizable Quick Button for performing actions like opening apps more rapidly

Motorola has unveiled the Motorola Edge (2024) smartphone costing $550, Android Central reported. It's basically the U.S. version of the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion announced earlier this year.

Available June 20, the handset features a 6.6-inch pOLED endless edge display with a zippy 144Hz refresh rate. The main camera uses a 50MP sensor, and there's also a 13MP ultrawide lens with a 120-degree field of view. The front-facing camera has a 32MP sensor. The new device is powered by Qualcomm's midrange Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 system on a chip and comes with a more powerful 5,000mAh battery.

It's the company's first 32-inch 4K OLED gaming monitor

In its in-depth analysis of Samsung’s new Odyssey OLED (G80SD), Home Theater Review said, “This gaming beast does it all.”

Ikea is hiring 10 Roblox players to work at in-game store

Duties will include helping customers while working in different parts of the virtual store. You'll even get to serve Ikea's iconic meatballs

Ikea is hiring real people to work inside a virtual store within the gaming platform Roblox, CBS News reported.

The Co-Worker Game starts later this month and will let selected participants "experience working in Ikea's virtual universe.” The virtual employees hired by the Swedish furniture giant will be paid the same hourly rate as an Ikea worker in a similar role in London, about $16.80.

"We're excited to be the first brand to launch paid work on Roblox to showcase how we do careers differently," the company said. "At Ikea, there is no set route to career progression. There are many ways to learn and grow at Ikea, and that's what Ikea on Roblox is all about” ...
