MPR News PM Update

Good morning it's Thursday, July 8.

☀️ More pleasant summer weather is in store for us today: sunshine and 70s across most of the state. Here's what to know today.

A vigil for an Olivia man killed by police was disrupted in an apparent show of intimidation.

Around 50 people remembered Ricardo Torres Jr., 32, where he was shot, in an alley near a main street in the western Minnesota town Wednesday evening. They described him as a man who would “take the shirt off of his back” for anyone.

Relatives and friends came from Olivia and towns nearby, but others drove in from the Twin Cities about 85 miles to the east to chant his name and pray. Some family members even came from Texas where Torres was originally from.

“His smile, his laugh was infectious, his personality, he was a good man,” said Natasha Lindner, his girlfriend and mother to their infant.

Darnella Frazier, the teen who recorded the police killing of George Floyd, said her uncle was the innocent driver killed in a crash during a police chase early Tuesday in Minneapolis. His car was struck as police pursued a robbery suspect in another vehicle.

The city identified the officer driving the squad car as Brian Cummings. According to city records, Cummings has been the subject of 13 complaint investigations since 2008. No discipline was issued and details about the nature of the complaints is not public.

"Another black man lost his life in the hands of the police!" Frazier wrote in a Facebook post identifying Leneal Lamont Frazier, 40. "Minneapolis police has cost my whole family a big loss ... today has been a day full of heartbreak and sadness."

Motorists, rejoice — the end is in sight for the massive four-year reconstruction of Interstate 35W in south Minneapolis. But before we reach the finish line, we'll have to deal with a few more road closures.

This weekend, I-35W between Interstate 94 and Minnesota Highway 62 will close in both directions from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday so that crews can move barriers to get the roadway into its final configuration in some places, the state Department of Transportation said.

Motorists will be detoured to Highway 62, Minnesota Highway 100 and Interstate 394.
