Dearest Reader,
I am currently (finally) listening to The Body Keeps the Score after trying (unsuccessfully) to read it in print. Every now and then, I think about the tweet that says, "if I were the body I would simply not keep the score," and I laugh.
My intro Creative Nonfiction students have turned in their first essays for me today, and I am both eager and afraid to open the documents. Sometimes, teaching CNF and editing CNF feels like watching a giant tidal wave labeled "trauma" come hurtling in my direction. One of the greatest traits an editor can have is curiosity: What are you wanting the reader to take from this moment? How does this scene connect back to the heartbeat of the essay? Where are we in space and time?
A round of applause here for all the people in our lives who take the time to listen to our stories and ask us questions. Write your editor/teacher/writing group a thank-you email. Tag them in a nice tweet.

We are now fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas. This means a couple of exciting things for us. 1) we are now eligible to apply for grants for the first time and 2) your donations are now tax-deductible.
Fiscal sponsorship is The Rumpus trying something new that's not a paywall, overloading the site with ads, or selling the site off to a big publisher or (worse!) someone who only cares about SEO. Ultimately, capitalism sucks for most artists and the places that try to champion them. Individual donors are a crucial part of making the magazine sustainable. Please give if you can!

The Brooklyn Book Festival is fast approaching, and we'll be heading up two different events in NYC.
First up, on Sunday October 2 @ 10am-6pm: The Book Fair! Swing by the table, pick up some mugs, join our book club, and meet our publisher, Aly Sinclair.
Then, less than twelve hours later, on Monday October 3 @ 7pm: McNally Jackson Seaport, we're hosting an official Brooklyn Book Festival Bookends event to celebrate Elissa Bassist's debut Hysterical (our September Book Club pick!) with some of our favorite Funny Women contributors throughout the years. Check out the full lineup below! |
