This month at Mozilla, we put pressure on Slack to implement basic user protections, introduce you to some of our newly funded projects making the digital world a better place, and explore the future of artificial intelligence.
| | Mozilla joined a coalition of over 90 organizations protesting outside of Slack’s San Francisco headquarters, driving mobile billboards around Slack’s offices in protest, and calling on the company to enable end-to-end encryption and introduce blocking and reporting features. Fifteen seconds with a Fellow Tarcízio Silva is a Senior Mozilla Fellow in Tech Policy, and a Brazilian researcher and technologist based in São Paulo. Tarcízio focuses on platform accountability, AI and racial justice in Brazil. Q: Brazil is introducing legislation to regulate AI. Does it go far enough to combat algorithmic racism? A: The recently submitted bill 2338/2023 has made progress in including transparency and accountability mechanisms but still does not explicitly recognize algorithmic racism or the influence of structural oppression. During the legislative debate, I hope that we will be able to discuss topics such as the definition of unacceptable high-risk uses, such as the use of facial recognition in the public space, and how to establish enforcement of the participation of vulnerable communities in algorithmic impact assessments. AI Antics AI is a serious topic. Sometimes it's necessary to bring some levity to the conversation. We want to hear from you! This newsletter is a space for you, our community and supporters.
