Mpls man seeks reparations from the church that enslaved his ancestors

When 64-year-old Minneapolis resident Elton Wright-Trusclair was growing up Black in Louisiana during 1960s-era Jim Crow segregation, his elders told him very little about his family’s history.

But Wright-Trusclair says he had a hunch that terrible things had been done to his family - maybe even at the hands of the Catholic institutions he saw relegate Black people to a lower status every Sunday morning and even in cemeteries.

“My grandparents raised me, but they didn't talk about that part,” he said. “They didn't talk about that. Some things, a lot of old people didn't talk about because that's how they were raised. That's how they did us, manipulated us down there. And a lot of old people didn't talk about stuff like that.”

In 2017, top clergy and officials from the Society of Jesus and Georgetown University revealed some of the painful secrets that Wright-Trusclair now believes his grandparents were too traumatized to share.

What else we're watching:
Doctors press Minnesota health systems for more access to abortion medication. Mifepristone is a best practice treatment for managing a miscarriage, doctors say. It’s also a key drug in medication abortions,  and physicians say they must run through regulatory hurdles to obtain it, limiting its use and perpetuating an unwarranted stigma.

Art Hounds celebrate community theater and music. Theatre 55 stages “Jesus Christ Superstar” in the open-air at Caponi Art Park amphitheater in Eagan. The Minnesota Mandolin Orchestra performs in several upcoming shows around the Twin Cities. Participants make the drama happen in “The Show Must Go On,” an escape room set at Daleko Arts in New Prague.

Pharmacies can't discriminate on reproductive health scripts. The Biden administration is warning pharmacies not to discriminate against women who may seek reproductive health prescriptions, including some that might be involved in ending a pregnancy.

U.S. regulators OK new COVID-19 shot option from Novavax. The Maryland company also hopes its shots can become a top booster choice in the U.S. and beyond. Tens of millions of Americans still need boosters that experts call critical for the best possible protection as the coronavirus continues to mutate.
