The teachers strike in Minneapolis may be nearing an end. 

Both teachers' and education support professionals 'chapters of the union, on strike since March 8, reported progress Thursday in talks with the district. 

The Minneapolis Federation of Teachers President Greta Callahan and the ESP chapter President Shawn Layden both said they were very close to getting to a deal. Layden called the talks the most hopeful he's seen since the strike began. 

The teacher deal could come today. The biggest sticking point now is salaries for teachers — they're asking for a 3 percent raise.

Minnesota House Democrats beef up plan to fight rising crime
The Minnesota House Democratic majority beefed up its public safety package with $50 million more. The extra money, on top of the Democrats’ earlier $100 million proposal, would go mostly toward grants to the 20 cities and 20 counties with the highest crime rates, or the fastest-growing rates. The Minnesota Zoo says its 12-year-old male Amur tiger named Putin died Wednesday, after going into cardiac failure as veterinary staff were conducting what they called a routine preventative health exam.
