Good morning. It’s a busy news day; here’s what you need to know to get started.

Disinformation is everywhere this election, and we want to help you sift through it. The 2020 campaign is already full of questionable information that’s intended to sway our opinions. From deepfakes to fake news, falsehoods spread more quickly than the truth. That’s why we put together this guide for how to spot disinformation.

Iran has retaliated against the United States. The country fired missiles at two Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops in response to the killing of top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani. As the AP reports, the missile strikes “were a major escalation of tensions that have been rising steadily across the Mideast following months of threats and attacks after President Trump's decision to unilaterally withdraw America from Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers.”


Minnesota’s Beltrami County has prohibited refugee settlement. It’s the first county in the state, and possibly the entire U.S., to explicitly bar refugees from resettling after a President Trump executive order required local governments’ approval. Other Minnesota counties unanimously allowed refugee resettlement; St. Louis and Stearns counties (home to Duluth and St. Cloud, respectively) have tabled the matter. 


Minnesota health officials are warning of radon exposure. They say renters and low-income people are at the greatest risk of being exposed to the cancer-causing, odorless gas.

Ukrainian jetliner crashes near Tehran airport, killing all 176 aboard
A Ukraine International Airlines jetliner reportedly carrying 176 passengers and crew has crashed near Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport, according to Iran state television, which said all those aboard are dead. Iranian officials said they believe one of the plane's engines caught fire.
Interfaith rally in Minneapolis affirms unity in face of anti-Semitism
Jewish communities across the country have become increasingly vigilant following anti-Semitic attacks in New York and New Jersey. In Minneapolis, a large gathering at Temple Israel represented an interfaith show of solidarity.
McConnell: GOP will start impeachment trial, delay witnesses
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday he has secured the Republican votes needed to start President Trump’s impeachment trial and postpone a decision on witnesses or documents that Democrats want.

Michael Bloomberg is making his first Minnesota appearance as a presidential candidate with a stop at a soybean farm Wednesday.

Why are Christians so divided over whether to support President Trump? The discussion has been simmering since the president got elected with the enthusiastic help of many evangelical Christian voters. Other Christian voters have deplored the president's behavior and political conduct. A December editorial in Christianity Today asserted that President Trump should be "removed from office" brought the disagreements into the open and to a full boil.

Our "Best of the Aspen Ideas Festival" series continues: David Brooks of the New York Times interviews Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist and the director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute. His new book is titled, "Deep Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again." Topol says we have dehumanized health care and destroyed the human bond between doctors and patients.
