Good morning and welcome to Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know to start your day.

Foggy, but not cold. Twin Cities highs in the upper 30s with some patchy fog dissipating by the night. Statewide, patchy freezing fog in the morning with highs ranging from the upper 20s to upper 30s. More on Updraft. | Forecast

I went birding last week and was sold on it. An avid birder took photojournalist Evan Frost and me birding last week — in the cold and snow — and it was among the most peaceful winter activities this lifelong Minnesotan has tried. Read the case for winter birding here. And while you’re at it, check out our Outside in MN app for more outdoor adventure tips and ideas.

Here’s something to feel good about. MPR News’ Emily Bright asked our audience to tell her about an act of kindness you experienced this year. And you responded. Read this for some feel good stories that have happened in Minnesota this year.

When you’re the governor, many days feel like Christmas. Turns out people like to give the most powerful Minnesotan gifts, as MPR News’ Brian Bakst reports. Often, the gifts are sweatshirts. Sometimes, they’re a  gourd painted to look like Jesse Ventura

What’re your favorite holiday movies? Any you can’t stand? MPR News with Angela Davis is having a Christmas Eve special of their own. On Dec. 24 at 11 a.m. Angela and movie maven Steph Curtis will be talking about their favorite Christmas movies. Have one you love? One you loathe? Share it with us here and it might get discussed on the show.

9 a.m. — MPR News with Kerri Miller

David Fajgenbaum was in medical school when the symptoms of a mysterious disease started to ravage his body. He endured years of hospitalizations and experimental treatments, even coming close to death five times, before his own training and perseverance led him to a drug that saved his life, even though it wasn't FDA-approved as a treatment for his disease.

Tuesday, Fajgenbaum talks with Kerri Miller about his memoir, "Chasing My Cure,” and his hope that his journey will highlight the need to leverage already approved drugs for a variety of illnesses.

10 a.m. — 1A

Houseplants are having a moment. A 2018 National Gardening Survey found that 77 percent of American households are now gardening — and young people are behind the latest uptick. Younger millennials and older members of Generation Z, aged 18-34, occupy 29 percent of all gardening households.

As houseplant ownership becomes more popular, so does the need for tips to keep those new, leafy roommates healthy. Blogger and author Darryl Cheng says we can start by looking beyond what may be going wrong with the leaves and embracing our plants' imperfections. He joins us to discuss holistic approaches to plant care and more
