Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Reporter Brandi Kruse

One of the most important hallmarks of an excellent reporter, not to mention a media winner, is sheer professionalism and determination when faced with an uncooperative or annoyed subject.

So when local news correspondent Brandi Kruse of Fox-affiliated Q13 FOX (KCPQ) in Seattle sat down with 2020 candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders and pressed him on a question he clearly didn't like, we noticed.

Sanders has repeatedly been confronted with the behavior of some elements of his base. This has been particularly so the last few days, with even fellow progressive candidates like Sen. Elizabeth Warren weighing in, and Mike Bloomberg's campaign actually cutting an ad on the subject.

Kruse brought the subject for her own Seattle viewers ahead of a Sanders rally in Tacoma on Monday, and the candidate's irritation came out. His snippy responses didn't faze Kruse, who managed to correct his mischaracterization of her question while seeking an answer.

The exchange made a great clip, garnered social media attention, and showed Kruse to be a solid reporter. That's a real media win.
MEDIA LOSER:
MSNBC

It's not often we'll designate an entire outlet as a media loser for the day, but the political world was at odds with MSNBC on Tuesday, and in particular the Democratic side of the aisle which comprises its target audience.

For one thing, a Vanity Fair article critical of the network's coverage of Sen. Bernie Sanders rocketed across political social media, and not in a good way for NBC. In it, Sanders 2020 campaign manager Faiz Shakir said that even Fox News has been “more fair than MSNBC." A damning indictment especially for the liberal network.

In that same article, Investigative reporter Glenn Greenwald blasted the network as “a full-scale disinformation machine serving the primary goal of the DNC.”

On social media, in addition to the Sanders criticism, the network has been under fire from progressives and supporters of Sen. Elizabeth Warren for acting like "she doesn't exist."

Ahead of the next big debate, one that the network is already dealing with Bloomberg qualifying for the stage (and some criticism from progressives of Chuck Todd's last debate performance rearing its head again), it was not a great media day for MSNBC.

The A-Block

Stop trying to make 'pull a Pelosi' happen

On Fox's The Five on Tuesday, Fox News contributor and former DNC chairwoman Donna Brazile brought with her to the table a set of papers she described as "graphs and maps" and other evidence to back up former President Barack Obama's claim on Twitter about the economy.

President Trump ranted about the Obama tweet on Monday night, which then became an all day football on social media and cable news on Tuesday.

As Brazile was discussing the subject on The Five, co-host Jesse Watters grabbed the set of papers and tore them in half. “Hey, I pulled a Pelosi," he said.

It was super awkward

Pardons and Salutations ... err, Commutations

President Trump on Tuesday exercised the power of the pardon pen, and with no small amount of vengeance on his mind, perhaps, while undertaking the project.

That's because the man who made the most news for having his sentence commuted was ex-Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. Trump said he made the decision after seeing Blagojevich's wife on TV (Fox), and he made a point of mentioning the ex-gov's prosecution had some folks in common with his own, such as James Comey.

"It was a prosecution by the same people - Comey, Fitzpatrick, the same group," said Trump

Blagojevich, as Trump noted in remarks to reporters, was a Democrat, not a Republican, and his corruption scandal was not just big news, but well documented. So the entire GOP House delegation from Illinois objected to Trump's decision. So did The Five's Greg Gutfeld. But at least it was a chance for today's Green Room Must See Video to resurface. Scroll down to enjoy.

Trump had a few other pardon pen strokes, too.

Soros v Zuckerberg: Rematch

Billionaire and liberal progressive mega-donor George Soros and billionaire Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg have had beefs before, and they'll have them again in the future, no doubt.

This week, the billionaires traded blows in the pages of the Financial Times.

Or more accurately, Zuckerberg wrote about his industry and his company needing more government oversight and regulation, and Soros said that Zuck's call for government intervention didn't go too far enough. They didn't start literally throwing wads of cash at each other, but how far off can that be, honestly?

Speaking of things not really appropriate to throw around...

Former 2020 Democratic candidate turned Elizabeth Warren surrogate Julián Castro joined Chuck Todd on MSNBC to state that Micheal Bloomberg is actually Donald Trump’s “wet dream.”

Um. Gross.

Must-See Clip of the Day

Your Harry Potter facts were not accurate

You probably heard about this video already. EVERYBODY was talking about it in the A Block section of this newsletter (above.)

But now's your chance to watch as then TV host Donald Trump took then non-incarcerated Rod Blagojevich to task over his inadequate knowledge of the Harry Potter films and books.

There's really no better description than to just say what it is. You know you want to watch.

So here you go!
