Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
MSNBC

MSNBC was the most-watched network during coverage of the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, averaging the most total viewers on each day of the five-day trial. CNN won in the key demographic of viewers age 25-54 during impeachment coverage.

MSNBC averaged the most total viewers, with 3.18 million, and the second-most in the demo, with 517,000. CNN had the most in the demo, with 695,000 viewers age 25-54, and an average 2.98 million total viewers. Fox averaged 1.7 million total viewers, and 257,000 in the demo over the five days of impeachment trial coverage, according to data from Nielsen.

From day one to day two of the trial, MSNBC and CNN saw ratings increases, while Fox’s viewership dropped. Viewership for all three networks declined on the third day of the trial, but on day four, as Trump’s attorneys made the case for acquittal, Fox saw a nearly 171% jump in viewership, drastically closing the gap with CNN.

While both CNN and MSNBC saw a drop in ratings on the fourth day of the trial – with MSNBC going from 3 million to 2.67 million, and CNN going from 2.87 million to 2.54 million – Fox nearly tripled its total viewership, going from 815,000 to 2.21 million total viewers on Feb. 12.

MEDIA LOSER:
Ted Cruz

Photos of Ted Cruz emerged on Twitter overnight showing the Texas Senator flying to Cancun, Mexico and away from the brutal and dangerous cold spell causing blackouts in his home state of Texas.

Arctic temperatures in Texas have caused dangerous power outages across the state, as much of the state’s electrical grid appears to have collapsed due to a variety of reasons. Cruz's Cancun escape made for a lot of angry reaction.

Cruz then headed back home, sparking more such mockery and outrage.

As the continuing developments evolved into a PR nightmare for Cruz, social media REALLY began to unleash cold hell. As did The View hosts on Thursday.

Eventually Senator Cruz released a damage control effort.

That isn't going to well either. In fact he's been trending at the top of Twitter and search all day, by name and also under the headers "Zodiac Killer" and #VoteHimOut. And when Dinesh D'Souza attempted to defend Cruz's actions, that itself became a trending topic.

There's nowhere for this to go now but more partisan and worse PR. Rarely is there such a clear case of losing the day's media.

The A-Block

Nikki Haley

Former Ambassador Nikki Haley penned an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal this week going on a tear against “the anti-Trump media" that was an implicit response to a recent Politico profile on her.

None of that won her any favor with Donald Trump, however, who reportedly turned down Haley's request for a meeting.

The various hot and cold takes from Haley prompted a blistering one from CNN's Brianna Keilar on Thursday.

Improprieties

The Lincoln Project is not saying whether any of the attorneys it hired to investigate allegations against co-founder John Weaver have previously donated to the group.

"Terrified"

A Democratic New York legislator is opening up about the threats he says he received from Gov. Andrew Cuomo  which left his family “terrified.”

“For 10 minutes he berated me,” Kim said on Morning Joe. He also told the hosts that Cuomo "threatens your livelihood if you don’t lie for him."

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told Morning Joe that this kind of bullying by the governor is "nothing new."

Death Wars

Rush Limbaugh’s death prompted a gusher of reactions from devastated fans and elated critics. Others pushed back against the former. Still others against the latter.

That Escalated Quickly

Thursday’s hearing of the House Financial Services Committee kicked off with flare as its chair, Rep. Maxine Waters interrupted Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev to ask that he “limited” time to “speak directly.”

Tenev used the first 30 seconds of his opening remarks to describe his background, prompting Waters to interject. “Mr. Tenev, I would like you to use your limited time to talk directly to what happened on January 28, and your involvement in it,” she  demanded.

MSNBC Needs to Part Ways With the Lincoln Project
OPINION

Of all the endless breathless, shamelessly adulating media coverage lavished on the now-shamed and imploding Lincoln Project, none was so thoroughly involved as that of MSNBC.

More than mere reporting or even repetition, MSNBC made the group’s principals into regular guests and paid contributors.

MSNBC can never erase the fact that it was strategically instrumental to the disgraced political action committee’s fortune that siphoned nearly $90 million from credulous anti-Trump voters during the 2020 presidential election.

But the liberal network still has a chance to sever ties with the group, and anyone associated with it, before things get worse. And make no mistake: Things almost certainly will get worse.

Must See Clip

****ing Insane

Trevor Noah went after Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, and Texas Republicans for somehow blaming Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the not yet implemented Green New Deal for the state’s power crisis.

“OK, this — this is f***ing insane,” said Noah. “These guys are so desperate to just let fossil fuels off the hook that they’re blaming AOC and the Green New Deal—which by the way, hasn’t even happened yet—for something that is happening in Texas right now.”

Also a fake ad for Texas Energon. It's good stuff.
