May 26, 2022

I'm sending this weekly newsletter out a day late because frankly I was in a terrible mood yesterday. Like everyone in the country, the school shooting in Texas really hit me hard and I found out my dad tested positive for COVID-19 for a third time in nine months (here's his update).

FYI: The photo above is us visiting my dad at his senior home in Connecticut. We arrived from Los Angeles late Saturday night. Here's my LAX-JFK trip report, which includes getting four business class tickets (using miles) for the price of one. We also spent the night at the Delamar Greenwich Harbor, which you can read about here

We're now in Rhode Island where everyone is getting ready for Memorial Day weekend. For my international readers, it begins tomorrow and marks the unofficial start of summer. The temperatures are a little chilly but it's beautiful and everyone's in a great mood because they made it through another rough winter and the warm weather is on its way.

I was supposed to be doing travel segments for both Ashleigh Banfield on News Nation and Neil Cavuto on Fox News but because of the shooting, they've been rightly scrapped. No doubt we were going to talk about summer travel as prices in most places are going up. If you haven't bought your summer flights yet, here are my tips on how to save on airfare and here are my car rental tips.

Continuing with the theme of bad news ... Earlier this month, three American tourists were found dead at a Sandals resort on the island of Exuma in the Bahamas. While the cause of death was not immediately clear, some medical experts expressed their belief that the cause was carbon monoxide poisoning. Yesterday, autopsy results were released, indicating that carbon monoxide poisoning was indeed the cause. Here's how to protect yourself

Get Rid of Bug Bites Naturally With the Bug Bite Thing

I'm visiting the east coast and quickly remembered that one thing I don’t miss about New England are the mosquitoes in the summertime. But this handy, portable device can make all the difference - it just quickly sucks out bug venom and takes away all the itching and discomfort. It's great for adults and especially if you've got kids or grandkids, since little ones often suffer worse from bug bites. It also works for removing splinters. You'll be a hero when you whip this thing out of your bag! You can purchase it on the Bug Bite Thing website or on Amazon (link in story) for just $9.99.  Read more about it here

Louisiana’s Oath to Music Festivals

Musically, Louisiana isn’t a state—it’s a starter planet. And there’s way more. Alaska Natives have a hundred different words to describe ice. Louisiana returns the favor when naming its sauces. “Fast food” here has claws and legs. Here's the story.

5 Things to Love About the New Avalon View

In an era when a plethora of river cruises are plying European waters, it’s getting harder and harder for them to stand out from the crowd.
