On 25 January 1980, during the height of apartheid in South Africa, three MK cadres  – Stephen Mafoko, Humphrey Makhubo and Wilfred Madela – walked into a bank in Pretoria.

After six hours of negotiations, two civilian casualties and the start of a movement that would change South Africa forever, the trio were shot and killed by police.

Netflix's latest local offering, Silverton Siege, sheds light on what happened on that day.

'One of the first things I did was actually Google Silverton Siege'

For many watching the film, it will be the first time they have heard of the Silverton Trio. This was the case for me, and it was the case for South African actor Arnold Vosloo, who plays Captain Johan Langerman in the film.

When sharing why he thinks this is such an important story to tell, Vosloo revealed in an interview with Channel24: "Honestly, there's so little history written down about it. I remember when I got the script, one of the first things I did after I read the script was actually Google Silverton Siege and Silverton Trio. And there's just scant sort of information out there."

Vosloo added that, while the movie will "entertain and show people a good time", it will also be "educational" for the many people who don't know about it.
