Good morning. Temperatures will be in the mid-teens to mid-20s from north to south with mostly sunny skies throughout the state. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Maine survivalist to star on ‘Naked and Afraid’ reality TV show

  • Maine survivalist Ryan Holt will put his skills to the test on an upcoming episode of “Naked and Afraid,” a reality TV show that challenges participants to survive for weeks in extreme wilderness situations. The show will focus on Holt as he hunts, builds a shelter and avoids the many dangers of South Africa — entirely alone. In the nude.

Bangor wrote more parking tickets in 1st year of automated enforcement
  • While a vehicle that uses mounted cameras to snap photos of license plates and issue parking tickets resulted in more tickets in its first year of use, city officials said the goal is not to bring in more revenue.

As Bangor debates where to put a bus hub, the larger question is about Pickering Square

  • In some ways, the question is a narrow one: should the city commit to constructing a small building on the Water Street side of the square to replace another bus terminal that closed last year as part of a renovation of the nearby parking garage?

But the resulting debate, which drew more than 100 people to a public hearing last week, has exposed a deeper rift about the future of Pickering Square, one of the few remaining corners of downtown Bangor that has been almost untouched by redevelopment in the past few decades.
Maine policymakers are proposing a jail funding fix. Criminal justice reform is an end goal.
  • The biggest changes proposed in a new task force’s report would commit the state’s contribution to jail to law, ending sheriffs’ annual appearances before the Maine Legislature and assign a dollar value to inmates sent to the jails by the state. The idea is that the accountability measures will force conversations around criminal justice reform, but there will still be winners and losers.
  • The apartments are part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Section 515 program, which, at its height in the late 1970s, financed the development of 35,000 rural, affordable apartments a year.

As the properties leave the program, they can lose their rental assistance, leaving tenants' fates uncertain as officials grapple with how to preserve the homes of people living in areas where there are few incentives for private development.

Maine anti-corridor group hit with ethics complaint that could force it to disclose donors
  • A dark-money group that has aired ads opposing Central Maine Power's proposed corridor was hit with an ethics complaint on Friday that could force it to disclose donors after it spent $50,000 to underwrite much of a referendum bid to kill the project. A representative of the group said it believes it has "followed Maine’s disclosure requirements."
  • Campaign contributions from the pharmaceutical industry to U.S. Sen. Susan Collins have become a main talking point for opponents of her 2020 re-election campaign, but her donations from the industry pale in comparison to her longtime colleagues and the money has fueled state politicians of all stripes for years.
George Stevens Academy cuts next year’s requested tuition increase in half
  • In a letter sent to the seven towns Friday morning and at a meeting with leaders from the seven towns in Blue Hill later in the day, academy officials discussed having the towns pay $300 per student for the 2020-2021 school year on top of the state-mandated tuition they’ve traditionally paid.
