Los Angeles and Virginia Beach received honorable mentions. | Women’s Work | Editorial By Meredith Schwartz Teachers, librarians, and nurses have some important things in common. They do essential, mission-driven work. They’re mostly women (from 74 percent of teachers to 90 percent of nurses). They’re often underpaid. They’ve faced increased job stressors in the last few years. Many are thinking of leaving their jobs, if not fields—up to 77 percent of Texas teachers in a recent poll. The resulting shortages put more pressure on those who stay. | ALA’s Tracie D. Also in nonfiction, Mr. B: George Balanchine’s 20th Century, by Jennifer Homans, is another starred selection. "This empathetic biography of master choreographer [and co-founder of the New York City Ballet] George Balanchine (1904–83) is an unqualified success.... This book will fly off the shelves. It’s that good and the subject that absorbing." Kevin Grant's Roots of Film Noir: Precursors from the Silent Era to the 1940s is another starred nonfiction title. And Joyce Chopra's memoir, Lady Director: Adventures in Hollywood, Television and Beyond, is also a starred nonfiction selection. "A strong, engaging read that offers insight into Chopra’s life and career and the all-too-familiar struggles of women professionals in misogynistic workspaces."
