Samson Mow, Bitcoin nation-state adoption advocate and CEO of JAN3, believes that the adoption of bitcoin by nation states in 2022 has set the stage for even more progress in 2023.
Mow, who is also the former CSO of Blockstream, discusses the benefits of using bitcoin as a global currency and the potential for it to help prevent economic depressions and conflicts driven by economic competition.
Mow's company, JAN3, was established to promote the adoption of bitcoin by nation states and accelerate its use as a global currency. At Bitcoin 2022 in Miami, JAN3 announced several projects including work in Madeira, Mexico and Próspera, Honduras.

Major Ukrainian Pharmacy Chain Enables Bitcoin Payments

ANC Pharmacy, a major pharmacy chain in Ukraine, has partnered with Binance to enable bitcoin and cryptocurrency payments at over 1,000 locations across the country.
Access to the contactless payments will initially be available only at locations in Kyiv. To use bitcoin starting on January 3 to pay for orders, patrons will need to download the Binance app and complete their purchase at the ANC website with Binance Pay before picking up their order at the store.
Binance has previously worked with Ukrainian grocery chain VARUS to enable cryptocurrency payments at their stores, and in 2022, the company offered a Refugee Crypto Card for Ukrainians forced to leave the country due to the war with Russia.

Fedi is launching a hackathon that will award 2.1 BTC to the first place developer in celebration of Bitcoin's 14th birthday.
Fedi is focused on building a Fedimint-based community custody platform and is seeking developers to create a Fedimint module that will bring real-world benefits to users.
Fedimint is an open-source custody platform that allows users to store bitcoin and extend its functionality with privacy, smart contracts and more. It is based on the concept of second-party custody, which involves trusting family members or friends with the custody of one's bitcoin in a way that improves trust and security compared to centralized third-party custody solutions.
The hackathon is being held in collaboration with Epoch, a capital provider for Bitcoin projects that aims to support Layer 2 and 3 protocols that enable the global adoption of bitcoin. The submission deadline for the hackathon is January 31, 2023, and winners will be announced within five days of the deadline.
