Wilda W. Williams, Fiction Editor
November 17, 2016

editor photoLast night's announcement of the winners of the 2016 National Book Awards launched the literary awards season on a high—and socially conscious—note with Colson Whitehead's masterly The Underground Railroad taking the fiction prize and Ibram X. Kendi's provocative Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America named best nonfiction. Prepub Alert editor Barbara Hoffert attended the evening's festivities and offers her account here. At LJ we celebrate the best of self-publishing with the winners of our second annual Indie Ebook Awards. Stay tuned for our top ten books of 2016, which will be disclosed in the December 1 edition of this newsletter.

The music world, which has not enjoyed a great 2016, lost another giant on November 7 with the death of singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen. LJ remembers this great artist through his words and music. Get ready for February’s Black History Month with these diverse mysteries and graphic novels, and observe Jewish Book Month with a selection of new and backlisted fiction.
