#1 NBCU Signs Streaming Deal With Hulu
Comcast's NBCUniversal, one of Hulu's owners, has signed an agreement that will put NBCU networks on Hulu's upcoming live TV streaming service. In addition to the NBC broadcast network, NBCU networks on the new live service will include Telemundo, USA, Syfy, Bravo, E!, MSNBC, CNBC and NBCSN.
WHY THIS MATTERS: With NBCU in the fold, Hulu will have all four major broadcasters available for subscribers. The agreement also includes what the companies called a "framework' for licensing NBC and Telemundo affiliates for carriage on the live Hulu service.

#2 Dish Loses 143,000 Pay TV Customers in Q1
In its first-quarter earnings report this morning, Dish Network revealed that it lost 143,000 subscribers in the quarter nearly twice consensus estimates while managing to post increased profits. The losses were nearly double analysts estimates of 72,000 for the period and nearly three times the 63,000 video customers the satellite company lost in the same period last year.
WHY THIS MATTERS: The actual loss of satellite TV customers was likely much heavier. Dish includes subscribers at its over-the-top Sling TV service in its overall customer numbers. In a research note Monday morning, MoffettNathanson principal and senior analyst Craig Moffett estimated satellite TV losses could be about 320,000. Moffett estimated that Sling added about 177,000 customers in the period, down from 273,000 in the fourth quarter but ahead of the 135,000 additions in Q1 2016.

Quote Of The Day

Due to a glut of new series and increasing on-demand options, the move to original scripted dramas is also showing unhealthy trends as cable networks struggle to find new audiences. To us, it seems like the era of Peak TV driven by an explosion of cable originals is coming to an end. But if syndication content doesnt work and original shows are struggling, there seems to be few options left for programmers.
