Announcements Director's Message from Helene M. Langevin, M.D. March 27, 2024 How does pain occur? How does it go away? Finding answers to these questions matters to the more than50 million adults in the United Stateswho suffer from chronic pain. I recently had the opportunity to join theNational Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council meeting, hosted by theNational Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, to share new directions in musculoskeletal pain research led by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). | JenniferBaumgartner, Ph.D. March 25, 2024 Complex and widespread public health issues such as obesity, loneliness, climate change, and health disparities require we consider a whole person orientation that looks at interactions among biological, behavioral, social, and environmental factors across individuals, families, communities, and populations. This is central to theNational Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) Strategic Plan. | March 2024 Clinical Digest This issue of the digest provides a summary of the current research for several health approaches for sleep disorders, including CBT-I, relaxation techniques, yoga, tai chi, acupuncture, music-based interventions, and meditation and mindfulness practices. | The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking candidates for two Staff Scientist positions: - Staff Scientist 1 will be the facility head to lead activities, supervise staff, and manage the budget of the NIH Pain Research Center (PRC). The PRC is part of the NCCIH Division of Intramural Research (DIR), which conducts basic, translational, and clinical research to improve our understanding of the mechanisms of pain processing and modulation of pain. The PRC is housed within the NIH Clinical Center, the nations largest hospital devoted entirely to clinical research. The PRC serves as a research, training, and diagnostic hub for intramural investigators to study and advance our knowledge of pain and pain mechanisms.
- Staff Scientist 1 will work in the Section on Affective Neuroscience and Pain (SANP; Principal Investigator Lauren Atlas, Ph.D.) and will be focused on neuroimaging methods and analysis, with a particular focus on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). SANP is part of NCCIHs Division of Intramural Research and affiliated with the Intramural Research Programs of the National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH) and National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Resources for Researchers Diversity Resources Upcoming Events April 9-13, 2024; Cleveland, Ohio The International Congress on Integrative Medicine and Health will take place in Cleveland, Ohio at the Hilton Cleveland Downtown. It will bring together leading figures from various fields to showcase recent scientific advancements in integrative medicine and health. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) will lead a variety of sessions at ICIMH, including topics important to researchers at different stages of their careers. April 30, 2024, 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. ET; Virtual Please join us for a preapplication technical assistance webinar to discuss RFA-AT-24-008, Leveraging Data at Scale to Understand Natural Product Impacts on Whole Person Health (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed). This RFA will support applications that develop computational tools to aggregate and analyze orthogonal chemical and/or biological data sets related to natural products in the context of whole person health research. The purpose of this webinar is to provide potential grant applicants with an overview of the RFA and address questions from the scientific community. The webinar will feature highlights of application considerations from program staff at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS). It will also include a presentation on review requirements from NCCIHs Office of Scientific Review. Register now. May 7, 2024, 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. ET; Virtual Please join us for a pre-application technical assistance webinar to discuss RFA-OD-24-014 - Botanical Dietary Supplements Translational Research Teams (RM1 Clinical Trial Required). This request for application (RFA) will support applications that conduct transdisciplinary, translational research on chemically complex botanical products or natural products to improve resilience with the goal of informing future clinical efficacy trials. The purpose of this webinar is to provide potential grant applicants with an overview of the RFA and address questions from the scientific community. The webinar will feature highlights of application considerations from program staff at the Office of Dietary Supplements and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). It will also include a presentation on review requirements from NCCIHs Office of Scientific Review. The webinar is provided for potential applicants who want to learn details about this exciting and unique funding opportunity that will provide a strong foundation for future transdisciplinary research on botanical natural products and for a future highly informative clinical efficacy trial of the effects on resilience of a chemically complex natural product.
