Expedited Concurrence Speeds Review of Qualifying Applications

One estimate is that it can take about 8 months (or longerin some instances, up to 20 months) after an applications due date to receive an award (per the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases).

PIEZO2 Ion Channel Plays a Key Role in Gastrointestinal Motility and Bowel Sensation

New research has identified mechanisms involved in sensing the presence of food in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and controlling the transit of GI contents. The findings demonstrate a key role for the protein PIEZO2 in controlling GI motility, a process critical for proper digestion, nutrient absorption, and waste removal. This research, conducted jointly by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the Scripps Research Institute, and other collaborating institutions, was published in a recent issue of the journalCell.

  The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to support proof-of-concept feasibility trials guided by theNIH Music-based Interventions (MBIs) Toolkit for researchon brain disorders of aging. These early phase clinical trials will generate evidence supporting the validity of theNIH MBI Toolkitsguiding principles as well as the necessary pilot data to design a subsequent clinical efficacy or effectiveness study (or pragmatic clinical trial) using MBIs in the context of brain disorders of aging, including but not limited to Alzheimers disease and Alzheimers disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD), Parkinsons disease, and stroke. The data collected should address gaps in scientific knowledge in order to facilitate development of a competitive large-scale clinical trial.
