Gathering Data Points for Acupuncture Research

Helene Langevin 2022 Headshot at Desk

Director's Message from Helene M. Langevin, M.D.
June 14, 2023

In the field of complementary and integrative health, few topics have generated more controversy than acupuncture. This is driven by an ongoing discordance at the core of this ancient therapy: although agrowing body of evidence demonstrates acupunctures potential role in managing different conditions, like chronic pain or insomnia, the practice itself isnt well understood. In particular, critics of acupuncture research have repeatedly pointed out that acupoints, one of the fundamental tenets of acupuncture, arent based on an objective understanding of the body.

Im proud that the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) has put into motion an effort to address this problem with a new initiative that will result in the development of anopen-access repository and databasefor the anatomical and physiological correlates of acupoints. This data initiative has long been needed to advance the work of researchers in the field.

New Insights Into Prevention and Management of Chronic Pain in Children and Adolescents

Tonya Palermo IMLS

June 15, 2023, 12:00 p.m.-1:15 p.m. ET; Virtual

Chronic pain affects up to 40 percent of children and adolescents worldwide. It can result in negative consequences, including reductions in childrens physical and psychosocial functioning and high health care use. The risk for continued pain and the impact of childhood chronic pain on health and development in adulthood are emerging areas of research. Psychological interventions delivered in childhood may help to prevent pain and disability and build resiliency across the lifespan.

2023 IMAG Multiscale Modeling Consortium Meeting

June 28-29, 2023;NIH Campus; Natcher Conference Center (Bethesda, MD)

The Interagency Modeling and Analysis Group (IMAG) organizes this consortium meeting annually to discuss important and focused issues concerning multiscale modeling (MSM) with the goals: to stimulate new Consortium activity and create a collaborative discussion environment for all participants of the MSM Consortium as well as non-MSM attendees from the research community. In this 2-day meeting, the first day will focus on Evolution and Success of the IMAG/MSM, what IMAG/MSM has accomplished in its 20-year history and what lessons can be gleaned from them, and will also feature an Early-Career Investigator Forum. The second day will focus on The Future of Multi-Scale Modeling, including how to increase justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI), synergize with other major initiatives, and grow the field of MSM in general. Early-career investigators will be an important aspect of both days as they will serve as bridges between the past, present, and future. The meeting will feature multiple speakers, including original awardees of the Consortium and include scientific sessions, panel discussions, and small working group activities to grow and enhance the community of multiscale modelers.

All researchers maysubmit an abstractfor a poster presentation by June 1, 2023.

Register by June 15, 2023.
