Announcements Pete Murray, Ph.D. Inna Belfer, Ph.D. April 5, 2023 Pain is one of societys greatest health burdens across America and the world. One hundred million Americans suffer from chronic pain alone, and treatment is often inadequate or, at its worst, harmful. As yet, there is no objective way to measure pain in ways analogous to the independent measures for temperature or immune response, for example. Pain is an individual, subjectiveexperience that is shaped by a persons unique biology, psychology, and social and physical environments. The highly personal and contextual nature of pain necessitates a patient-centered,whole personapproach to pain management that takes into account these other factors. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) seeks to identify an outstandingStaff Scientist 1to be thefacility head to lead activities of the newNIH Pain Research Center (PRC). The PRC is part of theNCCIH Division of Intramural Research (DIR), which conducts basic, translational, and clinical research to improve our understanding of the mechanisms of pain processing and modulation of pain. Applications will be accepted beginningApril 1, 2023, andmust be received by 11:59 p.m. ET onMonday, May 1, 2023,for consideration in the review period.
