Nearly half of Louisiana third graders risk being held back

Just under half of Louisiana’s third graders ended last school year reading below or significantly below grade level, according to a report released Tuesday by the state Department of Education.

This could be cause for concern for Louisiana, where starting this school year, third grade students who score below a certain threshold on their spring exam risk being held back. Read the full story.

Lastly, the grandmother of two boys found along Interstate 10 near Vinton this week says she is heartbroken and doesn't understand why her daughter might have hurt the children.

Conswella Jack, who lives in Lake Charles, had been helping care for the boys — a 4-year-old whose body was found behind an I-10 welcome center and his 1-year-old brother, who was found alive along the interstate.

“I was so blessed to hear the baby survived but also so hurt because one is now gone,” Jack said through tears Read the latest.
