Here's why you need that air gap!

Having a backup is the first step to data security - but it's not the only one by far. Simple disk backups may save you from many calamities. But keeping backups online makes them vulnerable to hacker attacks and ransomware  - a fate recently suffered by e-mail provider VFEmail. 

So when designing you backup strategy, make sure you stick to the 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of media, at least 1 of which must be stored offsite. 

In reality, this could mean backing up to both disk and LTO tape storage and/or to the cloud. The LTO tapes can then be stored in a safe location, not connected to the network, as your last resort to fall back on in case every other security measure fails. You will probably never need them - until you really really do!

Security is not a luxury - it could mean life and death to your business. Keep your data safe!
