An armed man took an East Row gunshop proprietor hostage in Civic shortly after 5pm, forcing the evacuation of most of the city centre, The Canberra Times reported on its front page on this day 35 years ago. The man had fired about 100 shots up and down East Row, damaging at least seven police vehicles. The gunshop proprietor, Graham Thompson, was freed about 8.40pm.
