By KELLY P. KISSEL | Metro editor Are industrial flares all they're made out to me? A number of environmental groups are worried that extra pollution is spewing into the atmosphere. They point to studies showing that while it was once believed that flares consumed 98 percent to 99 percent of harmful pollutants, the figure may be closer to 90 percent. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plans to review flares over the next 4½ years to see how effective they really are.
Louisiana gasoline tax is not meeting the state's road and bridge needs. A state audit shows that the amount of money raised by the 20-cents-per-gallon tax is inadequate. The tax hasn't been raised since 1990 and is not adjusted for inflation, like it is in 22 other states.
At the end of the week, Southern and LSU will play football for the first time. Although the schools are in the same city, and each have played football for more than 100 years, they've never crossed town to play the other. To mark the historic event, there are a number of activities planned this week. |
