The Editorial Approach and Discoveries |
|
Clive Brown's scholarly critical edition offers a meticulously edited text and, for the first time, presents a list of sources and a Critical Report. At the same time, the new Barenreiter edition of Beethoven's Violin Sonatas takes a somewhat different approach towards the production of a source-critical edition than the conventional Urtext. 19th-century composers viewed notation quite differently from 20th and 21st-century musicians. Much more was expected to be implicit in the notation, on the basis of well-understood performance conventions, than is the case today. Some signs, such as staccato marks, had multiple meanings, depending on context, and the absence of slurs did not necessarily indicate the absence of legato. Although Beethoven employed performance markings more extensively than many of his contemporaries, he did not mark things with anything like the care expected of a modern editor and often failed to resolve ambiguities in copyists' scores and engravers' proofs.
This edition aims to provide much more guidance as to the performance implications of Beethoven's notation, both in the musical text, through editorial markings, as well as in the Critical Report and the Performing Practice Commentary (in preparation). |
Introduction Both volumes include an Introduction (Eng/Ger) which describes the genesis and reception history of the sonatas included in the respective volume.
