Spiritual Renewal Week

Join with hundreds of people from around the world in a week of joyful learning and practice of the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda. Spiritual Renewal Week is held each summer at The Expanding Light Retreat in Northern California and some of the events will also be streamed live online. This year's theme is The Power of Personal transformation. Events include:

New Design

We have just launched a new version of Ananda.org. The homepage will now focus on the big picture of what Ananda is, and you can find all our new videos, q&a, blog posts, events, and more on our What's New page. Other new features include new blog categories such as Spirituality and Science: Explore the intersections of quantum physics, M-theory, medicine, and neuroscience with the perennial truths of universal religion—God, life after death, heaven, miracles, and transcendence. You can also listen to uplifting music by clicking on the musical icon in the top right of the screen.

The Temple of Light Work Day

It was 1977. The year before, a forest fire had swept through the first Ananda community and burned virtually all the houses, including my own humble yurt. I was building a new home. An octagonal log dome, built from trees killed by the fire. Fall was approaching fast and I had yet to get the roof up. I put out an announcement to the community to “come raise the roof.”  Virtually the entire community came, including Swami Kriyananda (Swami), our founder and direct disciple of the great yoga Master Paramhansa Yogananda. Swami had just returned from a three month stay in India and saw the notice in the mailroom. There he was, in dark slacks and a pure white tee shirt, helping skin the bark off the logs. It was an inspiring day for all.

The following year Swami lead a series of nationwide tours, The Joy Tours, to promote Ananda and recruit new members. During the outreach tour, he spoke eloquently on building community and world brotherhood and often referenced that particular workday.  Many of the current leaders and senior members were inspired by those talks to come to Ananda.

Throughout Ananda’s history, workdays (seva days) have been an integral part of building community. From the early geodesic dome temples at the Meditation Retreat to the ‘new’ Expanding Light Retreat, to ‘Tempio de Luchi’ in Assisi, and its sister Temple of Light in Seattle. And now, the Temple of Light at Ananda Village.

The Answer Release

The Answer will be released in India August 31st, and is becoming popular with celebrity tweets and mainstream stories across India. The Answer tells the true story of Swami Kriyananda’s experience of discipleship with the yoga spiritual leader Paramhansa Yogananda in California.Release of the film in the US is anticipated in 2018.
