Outdoor production of plants in containers requires frequent irrigation, typically daily or multiple times per day, resulting in container drainage that is often more than 20% of the amount of irrigation water applied.
But fabric containers can counteract that increased irrigation demand and plastic container drainage with decreased leachate loss.

Because sidewall evaporation in fabric containers has been shown to reduce container substrate temperatures, the team's objective was to determine if those fabric containers would reduce the release rate of controlled-release fertilizer, resulting in less leachate loss of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and greater longevity.
