DOE earmarks $1B for rural electric power system upgrades

DOE said that nearly one in six Americans live in a remote or rural community. Low population density and isolation from larger electric grids mean these communities often face higher energy costs and poor electrical reliability. Now, the Energy Improvements in Rural or Remote Areas program aims to strengthen energy systems in communities with 10,000 or fewer people. 

The project rebuilt 10 miles of 138 kV transmission line in St. Louis County and in the City of St. Louis.

The study finds that increasing the amount of transmission capacity between regions would improve the grid’s reliability, provide more affordable electricity, and improve grid resilience. 
“The nearshore environment has absolutely become more favorable for hurricanes near the Atlantic Coast,” said one researcher.
