It is also known as pop surrealism. Nothing is off limits, from Ratfink to comics to political satire. Low Brow Art often uses humor or sarcasm. “I saw an awesome show at the Harwood Museum curated by Greg Moon and others… to me it’s the next level in Art! It’s fun and heady. Carlos Fresquez
Carlos Fresquez was born in Denver, CO where he still resides. In the 1970’s he participated in Denver’s historic Chicano Movement protests, mostly organized by the Crusade for Justice. He had a cultural awakening during these protests which led him to begin creating artworks about his indigenous and Chicano culture. One of the main messages in listening to the protest speakers was to become educated. Once he graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, Carlos entered college to study art.
He received a BA from Metropolitan State University of Denver in 1980 and a MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1995. He has exhibited his drawings, sculptures, prints, installations and paintings in over 30 U.S. states and in a dozen different countries. Carlos has lectured about Chicano Art history and his own artwork at many colleges, universities, galleries and art centers including; The Bronx Museum, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Las Bellas Artes in Mexico City, The Albuquerque Museum, The National Museum of American Art; The Smithsonian and most recently at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver BC Canada.
He has been included in many touring exhibitions, including; Arte Caliente, traveling the U.S. (2005- 2007); The Colorado Artist Fellowship Awards Exhibition- touring the state (1997); The Chicano Codices; Encountering Art of the Americas, which toured the American southwest (1992-1994); Rasquachismo; Chicano Aesthetics, which toured the state of Arizona (1988-1989); and the groundbreaking exhibition; CARA - Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation which traveled nationally (1990-1993).
He is a former Professor of Art, he recently retired after 33 years of teaching at the university level. He became a CHAC member back in 1979 and has been a proud consistent member since then.
