Harbin in Springtime – its most picturesque season? |
|
Dear John,
Northern California’s blessedly wet winter has birthed a green and lush spring at Harbin. Grasses, wildflowers, new growth on the hillsides and in the forest understory... The feeling of life on the land, and throughout Harbin’s ever-improving facilities, is potently and joyously returning. Right now, we’re gladly completing several construction projects, and about to reintroduce daily yoga and movies. And, as ever, we’re enjoying the warmth and chill of the spring waters, the peaceful quietude of the land, and all the uniquely relaxing pleasures of being at Harbin during this lovely time of year. News and photo links follow. Enjoy! |

Please explore and hang out in our Garden!
There’s an undiscovered green gem at the heart of our lower Mainside area, and we’d like you to find it: the Harbin Garden. It’s spacious, shady, green, gorgeous... and there’s often nobody there! It’s a perfect secret oasis-within-our-oasis for enjoying your coffee or lunch; for resting after a massage; or for naps, conversations, quiet acoustic instrument playing (no drums, please), or just sitting peacefully and enjoying the painterly paradise of colorful and aromatic blooms. Perhaps miraculously, more than half the Garden area survived the fire unburned. During our closed years, this precious green zone was a refuge of hope for our staff – many of whom poured hours of love and labor into protecting, maintaining, and improving it. Today, that love is clearly evident. There are big, leafy shade trees, an apple orchard, and a plethora of interesting and unusual plants and flowers. There’s also a lovely shaded lawn where you can spread your towel or blanket. And there are newly expanded stone benches for sitting amidst the flowers; big, comfortable wooden benches nestled under the shade trees (including some benches and trees very generously donated by our guests); and we even have new chaises on order for your lounging comfort! Finding the Garden is easy: it’s the central hub of our lower Mainside area. There are individual Garden gates leading directly from/to the Café area, Health Services, the Events Trailer parking lot, and the new cement path that meanders to the new Sundeck staircase (to reach the Garden from the Pool Area, take this staircase down and follow the cement path to its end). You can also enter the Garden from the top of Magic Inn Road, or from our new Middle Road (the cinder path in front of the old Smoking Deck). However you choose to enter our Garden, though, please remember to securely latch the gate behind you – or the deer might eat all the flowers! |

More Buildings Opening
This has been a period of steady construction progress for us, in several locations. Almost all of our beautiful Grove Cottages and cozy, kitchen-including Creekside Caravans are now available for overnight rental. The finishing touches on our temporary Events Trailer are nearly complete – and soon we’ll begin offering free yoga classes every day, free movies every evening, and free satsang videos once a week (consult our Events Calendar for all the details). The new kiosk at the site of our former Gatehouse is almost finished, and we hope you’ll be pleased to see that it so closely resembles the Gatehouse you remember. And finally, if you’re a coffee lover, we’re about to significantly upgrade your Café experience with the addition of a dedicated Coffee Cart there, offering organic espresso and a full selection of coffee drink delights. Yum! |

New options for Sustaining Donors, both large and small.
Harbin’s rebuild is a complex process that will be ongoing for years, and a number of donors have inquired about ways to support Harbin into the future through planned giving. For these guests, Harbin has been a sanctuary and touchstone for many decades, one that has provided respite and relaxation year after year. We believe that the idea of ensuring a “Harbin” for people to enjoy in the future is an intention that others may wish to support. In that light, we invite you to review our newly revised web Donor Page, where you will find a number of different options for Planned Giving, and information about how we can accommodate gifting of various types and levels.
Please know that all donations are important to us, no matter their size. But if you’re on a budget and perhaps looking for a comfortable way to create a larger impact, or to support us over time, we suggest setting up a Recurring Donation of any monthly amount you can comfortably afford (even a few dollars): these contributions add up over time, and can help us significantly. Thank you again for your support, and for considering Harbin in your plans for future giving. |

And so many pretty pictures!
It has been such a lush and colorful time of year here, that our photographer went a little snap-happy and took a lot of photos. To see a bigger-than-usual selection of some of his favorites, and ours, please click on our latest photo gallery. Of course, no number of photos can do justice to the experience of actually being here. The welcoming of the people; the feelings of the water and sun; the sounds of the creek, birds, and wind; the smells of the flowers and fresh-trimmed grass; the relaxed, peaceful stillness... It’s all something you have to experience for yourself. But here’s how one recent Harbin guest described their visit in our Guestbook: “Her (Harbin’s) facilities, now, are diverse again, her services becoming more broadly reaching, her days bathed in sunlight and blue skies. Her creek and waters quickly and abundantly flowing. No doubt she is still tender and vulnerable, but she is a testament to belief in her offerings, persistence in her renewal, and LOVE. Love for her, love of others, love for the planet.”
It’s a beautiful testament to what many recent Harbin guests have been feeling. And we invite you to visit us soon – we look forward to sharing the love with you! |
