Last week, I was working with one of my interns and we were calculating some Carb and Correction Factors for bolus dosing of insulin. After Brenda Oppong, PharmD Candidate, LECOM School of Pharmacy, had that down we started practicing mealtime insulin use based on glucose readings and carbs, and taking into effect onboard insulin. She was doing all this on her iPhone on the calculator app. I mentioned how lucky she was, because when I first starting calculating doses, I had to do it on an old wire light calculator with no floating decimal or memory.
When she submitted her article for the week, I was reminded that not only have we come a long way with calculators and phones, we have made great progress since insulin was first used about 100 years ago. Check out her Laterpay feature on Type 1 Diabetes and New Innovations.

Did You Know? The Effect of Resistance Training for Those 90 Million Patients with Prediabetes:

Resistance training (RT) is an effective intervention for glycemic control and cardiometabolic health in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, RT in individuals at risk for T2D to prevent or delay the onset of T2D, and RT program characteristics that are most effective, are still unknown. The purpose of this review is to determine the effects of RT on cardiometabolic risk factors in those at risk for T2D and to examine RT program characteristics associated with intervention effectiveness.
PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Embase databases were systematically searched for published controlled trials that compared cardiometabolic outcomes in adults with cardiometabolic risk for those that underwent an RT intervention with those that did not. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to determine the effect of RT on glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), body fat percentage (BF%), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides (TG). Additional analyses examined the effects of intervention duration and dietary intervention on FPG and TG. Fourteen trials with 668 participants were included.
The results concluded that RT is beneficial for improving glycemic control, BF%, and blood lipids in those at risk for diabetes. A dietary component did not result in more significant reductions in FPG and TG than RT alone. Resistance training (RT) effectively improves glycemic control and blood lipid profiles in adults at risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). It could serve as an effective intervention to prevent or delay the onset of T2D. The researchers also concluded that free weight and resistance band training at intensities above 60% one-repetition maximum effectively improves glycemic control and blood lipid profiles in adults at risk for T2D.
