Announcements  As Ive dived into my role as Director at NCCIH, one of the things thats made me so energized about the position is the smart, pragmatic thinking embedded within the Strategic Plan NCCIH adopted in 2016. Its a twofold cogent recognition of: 1) the very real challenges faced daily by patients and their health care providers, and 2) the opportunities the research community has to offer much-needed evidence to inform decisions about patient care. Especially important isour third strategic plan objective, which focuses on how we can explore the potential of complementary health approaches to foster health promotion and disease prevention across thelifespan. |
 Between combined years 1997/1998 and 2013/2014, the number of U.S. adults experiencing non-cancer pain increased by 25 percent, and yet during this same period there was a decrease in visits to health care providers for pain, a small decrease in prescription pain medications overall, but a large increase in the use of opioids, especially strong opioids. Individuals from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, Social & Scientific Systems, and Yale University School of Medicine, Yale Center for Medical Informatics analyzed data from a national survey. NCCIH welcomes five new members to the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Integrative Health (NACCIH). The NACCIHcomposed of physicians, scientists, complementary health practitioners, and members of the publicrepresents a broad range of science and practice. Members each serve 4-year terms and meet three times per year to provide second-level peer review in consideration of NCCIH scientific program priorities and program balance. Members also offer advice and recommendations on the prioritization of complementary and integrative healthresearch. NCCIH is currently seeking a Scientist with a demonstrated background in epidemiological research to work onsite with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. Resources for Researchers The University of Massachusetts Center for Advancing Point of Care Technologies (CAPCaT) in Heart, Lung, Blood, and Sleep Diseasessupported in part by NCCIHannounces an award solicitation focused on developing, adapting, or validating technologies that can be rapidly applied to heart, lung, blood, or sleep disorders, with interest in projects that incorporate complementary and integrative health approaches. Awards will be up to $100,000 paid over 12 months. Pre-proposals are due Friday, March 1, 2019 no later than11:59pm and must be submitted through the POCTRN. Upcoming Events  "Microbes in Our Gut: Emerging Insights on Health and Disease is the focus of NCCIHs Spring 2019 Integrative Medicine Research Lecture Series.The first lecture in the series is on March 14 at 11 a.m. ET, Dr. Sean F. Brady of The Rockefeller University will present a talk entitled Watch Where You Step, There Is New Chemistry Everywhere. Dr. Brady will describe new techniques that make it possible to study bacteria that cant be grown in the laboratory and explain how these methods may lead to the identification of new antibiotics and better understanding of the human microbiome. |
