NCCIH Director's Messages: NIH Rolls Out Large Wave of NIH HEAL Initiative Funding -- NCCIH's Ongoing Role

Today, NIHannouncedthat it has awarded $945 million in research to tackle the national opioid crisis through theHelping to End Addiction Long-term InitiativeSM,or the NIH HEAL InitiativeSM. The funds will be used forgrants, contracts, and cooperative agreementsacross 41 states. The NIH HEAL Initiative is a trans-NIH research effort that has the goal of improving treatments for chronic pain, while curbing the rates of opioid use disorder and overdose and achieving long-term recovery from opioidaddiction.

New Funding Opportunities for Natural Product Drug Interaction Research: Preapplication Webinars on October 3

Americans consume natural products every day either through their diet or via dietary supplements. The 2012 National Health Interview Survey estimates that 18 percent of adults in the United States use non-vitamin, non-mineral natural products as supplements. An estimated 20 to 30 percent of patients on prescription medication indicate they are also taking dietary supplementsconcomitantly.

The International Congress on Integrative Medicine and Health will take place at the Hilton Cleveland Downtown in Cleveland, Ohio on April 28 - May 1, 2020. The Congress is convened by the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health, in association with the International Society for ComplementaryResearch.

The deadline for abstract or proposal submissions is October 11, 2019.

The NCCIH DIR conducts basic, translational, and clinical research to improve our understanding of neural mechanisms of pain processing and nonpharmacologic modulation of pain.
