Announcements  September 26, 2019 Today, NIHannouncedthat it has awarded $945 million in research to tackle the national opioid crisis through theHelping to End Addiction Long-term InitiativeSM,or the NIH HEAL InitiativeSM. The funds will be used forgrants, contracts, and cooperative agreementsacross 41 states. The NIH HEAL Initiative is a trans-NIH research effort that has the goal of improving treatments for chronic pain, while curbing the rates of opioid use disorder and overdose and achieving long-term recovery from opioidaddiction. |

The 2012 National Health Interview Survey estimates that 18 percent of adults in the United States use non-vitamin, non-mineral natural products as supplements. An estimated 20 to 30 percent of patients on prescription medication indicate they are also taking dietary supplementsconcomitantly. |
