| | | | | The 2018 OPPS final rule finalized an additional exception to the clinical laboratory date of service (DOS) policy that has created extra billing and implementation challenges. The exception changes the DOS for advanced diagnostic laboratory tests (ADLT) and molecular pathology tests excluded from the OPPS packaging policy to the date the test was performed instead of the date of specimen collection. Because of this, facilities must deploy new billing processes specifically for these tests, thus reducing their ability to streamline billing practices for inpatient and outpatient testing.
Provider feedback led CMS to delay enforcement of the provision until July 1, 2019; however, it is critical for hospitals and laboratories to confront operational and contractual challenges in order to comply with the new policy by the revised enforcement deadline. | | | | | | | | | |
